IRISH SETTER
What a pleasure to judge at such a well-run and well-supported show – a nice addition to the Open Show scene in the West Country that I hope will continue for years to come. Thank you to the committee for the invitation to judge and to the exhibitors who gave me such a lovely entry. All classes well filled with some splitting hair decisions. I enjoyed my day!
Irish Setter Puppy (6, 3a)
Sadly three puppies missing due to the scourge of kennel cough, but thank you to that exhibitor for thinking of the rest of the dogs at the show. Still three lovely puppies to go over although my 3rd place was not at his best in the ring on the day.
1st Full’s Dairis Emperor Excellence at Teignestuary 10.5 month old boy with nice driving movement. Masculine head with gentle expression, correct length of muzzle and earset. Adequate length of neck leading into nicely laid back shoulders. Good front angulation and forechest. Sloping topline leading into correct tailset. Good bend of stifle for his age and neat feet completed the picture. Moved well. BP and pleased to see him take Gundog Puppy Gp 3. 2nd MacDonald’s Lynwood Melody of Love. Very pretty headed bitch who moved well but missed out today being a little ‘bum high’ in her development stage. 3rd Watts’ Polmennor Tom Bawcock
Irish Setter Graduate (6) 1st Meadows’ Gwendariff D’ya Like Me Best Very feminine 16 month old with the kind of outline I like. Pretty head with melting expression. Lovely length of neck flowing into a sloping topline with a good tailset. Love her bone and tight feet. All her angulations were correct, allowing her to move very well around the ring with drive. 2nd Jones’ Hunnicote Handyman. Another lovely dog who I’ve watched grow up. Moving very truly with drive and everything in the correct place. Just preferred shoulder angulation and tighter feet on the winner today. 3rd Steer’s Glenarra Never Say Never
Irish Setter Limit (8, 1a)
1st Marmol’s Polmennor Fun In The Sun At nearly 7 years old this boy still has a lot to give. Lovely outline with a masculine head and a true Irish expression. Lovely length of neck flowing through his topline to his tailset. Good forechest and spring of rib, enough length of loin and good angulation throughout. Moved well in his class and in the challenge, so pleased to give him RBOB and to hear he was awarded Best Gundog in the RBOB class. 2nd Meadows’ Gwendariff D’ya Like Me Best 3rd Pike’s Redclyst Jackson
Irish Setter Open Dog (4)
1st Meadows’ Gwendariff the Big Atraxion Elegant dog typical of this well-known kennel. Masculine head with melting expression. I would have preferred a slightly darker eye but this did not detract from the overall picture. Good angulation throughout with good bone, shoulders and forechest. Shown in very good condition and moved with drive and showmanship. Pushed closely for RBOB. 2nd Gardiner’s Blaysdell Kieran Another very nice dog who was close to the winner in most areas. Darker coated and with a lovely head and expression. In good condition and moving well. Just missed out today by being a little shorter in the loin. 3rd Ord’s Heathclare Home of the Brave
Irish Setter Open Bitch (8, 2a)
1st Meadows’ Gwendariff Whispa Daisy (BOB & Gundog Gp 4) Another bitch with a lovely stylish outline. The mother of my graduate winner, all the comments on her daughter apply to this elegant girl. Very pretty feminine head with melting expression and correct earset. Good length of neck which flowed into a sloping topline and nice tailset. Front and rear angulation sufficient enough to give her the grace and power to drive around the ring with verve and elegance. Happy to award her BOB and to hear that she subsequently took Gundog Gp4. 2nd Pike’s Orlanset Sarah at Glenury. Very sweet bitch presented in good condition and moving very well. A little heavier over the shoulders than my winner. 3rd Steer’s Glennara Never Say Never

LABRADOR RETRIEVER
I’d like to thank the committee for inviting me to judge at this well run show and their excellent hospitality. I’d also like to thank my long suffering steward and the exhibitors who accepted their placings sportingly.
It was lovely to see so many dogs in fit condition with some super youngsters coming through – promising for the breed. A few dogs present had under-developed rears spoiling their outline in profile; along with maturity, this is something that can be worked on, although I appreciate from my own circumstances that this can sometimes be difficult.
Puppy (4,2)
Two very nice, if different type puppies
1st Newstead’s Champles Betty Grable – Darker yellow, 10-month old bitch with a pretty head, well laid back shoulder with good front angulation, strong front and rear pasterns. slightly shorter than 2nd in body with amply developed rear making her appear more balanced in profile, well let down hocks moved very well – would like to see a little more animation – Best Puppy
2nd Fishlock’s Carpenny Victoria – Almost white 10-month lively bitch with superb pigmentation, not quite as well angulated in the front with a slightly longer body than 1st also strong front and rear pasterns; overall pleasing to the eye. Would prefer a little more depth in rear - she was very playful, OK when settled; could do with moving a little faster.
Junior (5, 2)
1st Findjan’s Rossacre That’ll Do – What a striking head on this happy mid yellow shaded boy; excellent pigmentation, particularly around the eyes. Having seen him in the ring previously, I was impressed how he’d matured and balanced out, good length of leg, ample bone, well laid back shoulder, impeccably clean lines throughout, with good reach of neck; Short coupled with well-developed rear and well let down hocks, very “at one” with his owner. Correct otter tail used to full advantage on the move, moved perfectly fore and aft, looking like he could easily have gone all day; nothing overdone. Very exciting youngster - Best of Breed
2nd Philpott’s Rossacre Keno – 17-month old clean lined appealing black in good coat; well barrelled rib, short coupled with well-developed rear; would have preferred more reach of neck Like many dogs of his age, challenging to move for his owner, but when settled, moved well, and when standing, very in tune with his owner.
Graduate (4,1)
This was a very nice class
1st Findjan’s Rossacre Xekia – Striking lively black 17-month old bitch well balanced, short coupled youngster, of smallish proportion and good length of leg in keeping with her age. Mesmerising head, difficult to deny her anything I should imagine with good reach of neck. Superbly clean lined throughout, in good hard coat; Moved well, kept her handler on her toes when standing – Best Opposite Sex.
2nd Jeffery’s Carohall Day Dreamer at Mibridge – 18-month old black male larger than first with a well-developed barrel rib, in good coat and well angulated front and an endearing head with nice eye colour: would have preferred more substance on rear to match his well-developed front, making him more balanced in profile, moved well.
3rd Fishlock’s Carpenny Lady Love
Open Dog (3,0)
1st Newsteads Champles Top Brass – 3-year-old mid yellow coloured male of good substance, well laid back shoulder leading to good front angulation, clean lined and short coupled with well-developed rear – moved very well – preferred the softer head of my BOB winner – Res Best of Breed
2nd Jeffery’s Lembas Swings Both Ways at Mibridge – 3-year-old well developed and balanced male with the most endearing head – short coupled and in good coat – preferred rear of 1st.
3rd Bond’s Carpenny Seashore.
Open Bitch (7, 3)
Lovely class of bitches with very little to distinguish between them, making movement a key deciding factor.
1st Findjan’s Rossacre Summer Skye – 3.5-year-old light yellow bitch of moderate but fully balanced proportions, correct barrelled rib and short coupled. Appealing head with good pigmentation and correct ear-set. Strong rear with let-down hocks; tough choice between 1st and 2nd - won the class on movement.
2nd Jefferies Antonine Paige Turner of Jubiwell – 4-year-old clean lined appealing black bitch with attractive head and nice eye colour. Bodily well in proportion, short coupled and in good coat, she stood beautifully for her handler. Moved well
3rd Findjan’s Rossacre Indy Anna

HANDLING
Junior Handling
6-11 years
1st: Emma Sweet with a Polish Lowland Sheepdog. A smart, well presented young handler who knew how to stack her dog quickly and with minimal fuss. When showing teeth watch out for your head getting in the way. Moved the dog at the correct pace and carried out correct patterns, just to polish off your performance make sure your lines are straighter. Good use of voice, talking to the dog and praising when necessary.
2nd: Catlin Tree with a Pug. Another very smart handler, again presenting her dog well. When asked to show the teeth she replied that they don’t need to be shown and this was polite and professional. Moved out well, patterns completed correctly. I would like to hear her talking to the dog a bit more as towards the end, the dog’s attention was drifting.
12-16 years
1st: Catlin Channon with an Ibizan Hound. Excellent handler, scored very highly on presentation of the dog. Smartly dressed and looked professional and ready to work. Constantly praising and encouraging her dog when needed without going overboard. Teeth shown correctly. Patternwork was neat, accurate and dog was moved at the correct pace. Final presentation was quick, neat with no fussing. All round a very good handler who put in a very good performance. Best Junior Handler.
2nd: Ellie West with a Boxer. Another with a high standard of presentation. Presented her dog quickly and calmly. When showing teeth just be aware of where your head is though. Patternwork was correctly carried out, again just to smarten up a good performance just watch your lines. Praising the dog and not going overboard with vocals.
17-24 years What a cracking class. The smallest of mistakes were separating 1st to 6th, basics like dangling leads, head in the way of showing teeth, straighter lines. A small mistake can cost a place when the standard is so high.
1st: Stacie Nicoll with a Cocker Spaniel. Just brilliant. A faultless presentation. A very good handler, presenting well and making the dog the centre of attention. For a moment I was actually watching the dog. On the table, the dog stood correctly, teeth shown well. Patternwork carried out perfectly and immaculate lines and turns. Constantly praising all the time, again without going overboard. Watching where I was and yet maintaining focus on her dog. Dog moved at the correct pace and final presentation was quick, neat and unfussed. A very good handler winning a very good class.
2nd: Ashlie Pike with a Japanese Akita Inu. I know Ashlie’s handling and I know when she entered the ring this was going to be tough and she didn’t let me down. Professional looking, Presenting her dog well and another making the focus on the dog and not her, blending well into the background. Teeth shown well and at all times using her voice well. Patterns carried out correctly and neatly. Nice and tidy final present. Just on this occasion I preferred the smoother lead changes of 1. Pushed 1 to the final moment though.
25 + years
1st: Karen Plummer with a Tibetan Terrier. I’ve sung Karen’s praises before and again here, she didn’t disappoint. I still rate her as one of the best handlers in the age range that I’ve seen. Whether she is stacking her dog on the floor or table, the dog was always immaculately presented. Karen stood out from this class for her no fuss, attitude, nothing was too much. Teeth shown correctly. Dog moved at correct pace to really show off the movement. Lines neat, turns sharp and good use of her voice. Final present was quick, smart and well executed. Always paying attention to what was happening in the ring. Another faultless performance.
2nd: Rena Barrow with a Beagle. I’ve judged this lady before and rated her very highly and again another that didn’t disappoint. Very professional. Her dog was presented correctly. On the table although the teeth were shown well, the lead was across the dogs face. Pattern work was carried out neatly and corners nice and sharp. The dog at times appeared a bit nervous but Rena used her voice to encourage the dog to get it performing. Final presentation was again quick and tidy. Another strong handler.
